The Derry Central line was never a commercial success in the days when railways were commercial enterprises. Today it, or some variation of it, may still find use in the future if other connecting lines were to be reopened.

Drivers are openly defying the signs at 10th and St John, San Jose, by refusing to divert. St John is supposed to be a low-traffic bike boulevard, but it is nothing of the kind because of this behavior. This intersection needs a redesign. Left turns from 10th need to be blocked completely and more robust barriers need to be put in place in all directions.

VTA light rail stuck in traffic

Near miss by 7CWT516 making illegal turn
My light was green, I had right of way. He was in the right-side lane on the other side, from where it is illegal to make a left turn. He accelerated in front of the cars in the correct lane and failed to yield. He had a red left turn arrow, so he ran that too. I had to brake to avoid a collision. 7CWT516. Bike and Pedestrian Bridges for Lurgan - where would you put them?
Bike and pedestrian bridges can add a huge amount of value to a local area by creating shortcuts for cyclists that are not available to car drivers. This can plug key gaps in bicycling infrastructure to create safe routes for cycling that allow people of all ages and cycling abilities to get around safely, free from danger presented by heavy traffic. More people cycling also reduces the number ...
The lost roads of Derrytrasna
A look at the old Ordinance Survey maps of the Derrytrasna area reveals a whole network of roads that have long since disappeared. While there would be no compelling reason to restore them, it is worth thinking about how to improve cycling infrastructure in the area by way of new lanes that could be added to connect key destinations, for a fraction of the cost of building roads. apps.spatialni....
Tracing the Navan to Kingscourt railway line on Google satellite and street view
Opened in stages from 1872 to 1875, the Kingscourt branch line was intended to connect with the Great Northern Railway, ultimately connecting to Cookstown. This would have meant coal from the mines around Coalisland making its way to Dublin via Navan, but this was never completed. The result was a branch line serving a sparsely populated part of the country, and its primary use was freight, pri...

As far as I'm aware the line from Tara Mines to Drogheda is still open for freight, but the other lines out of the town were lifted. The line from Dublin is partly reopened for passenger services as far north as a park-and-ride station called M3 Parkway. In this video I suggest a better use of the land around that station than what is there now. Features: Tara Mines en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tara_M...

The case for bringing Armagh railway station back to Railway St.
If Armagh-Portadown is to be the first of the old Great Northern Railway lines to get reopened, it's vitally important that we get it right so that we prove the concept and serve as an example to how to get railway service restored to other towns and cities that lost it in the 1950s. The location of the station has major implications for passenger numbers, the viability of the line, and also fu...

The best introductory video I have ever seen for hurling on youtube but at 15 years old the video is sorely dated. A remaster or an updated version in the same style of this video is badly needed to help bring the magic of hurling to the world.

Really exciting to think this and other mothballed lines could be reopened as fully rail services once again. I really hope there's political will, and importantly financing, for re-establishing these train services. Using the old alignments makes the most sense on a purely cost-basis but they'd probably need to sort out land acquisition as a fair bit of it has new infra on it like roads and new housing estates. Might need to modify track alignments; the rail review doesn't copper-fasten the route alignments and makes clear it would be up to the two governments to decide final route alignments. But a Mullingar-Cavan-Armagh-Portadown line, with connections to Belfast and Dublin is really exciting, especially for me in the border region.

I think the last station master in Stewartstown was Bob Coulter. After the line closed a family called Reilly lived in the station house. as kids we used to climb up into the old signal box and pretend the train was coming. The bridge you show was across the road to Clonoe. The road was realigned as the bend under the bridge was very tight. So the bridge ended up in a field. We used to be able to walk most of the old rail bed as far as Lisnastrain. About 55 years ago. The old goods yard buildings were repurposed for several local businesses.

Excellent manipulation of available resources aided by your passing comments. My uncle lived in Newcastle for a while before returning to live in Belfast. To escape a family gathering one December I managed to have a good look at Newcastle Station before the railway co. released the land and buildings for other uses. As children his brothers used to write to him at school adding the accolade B&CDR after his name on the envelope.

Electrical company I used to work at from 2001-2003 had its office in the Annaghmore Station building. The building in yor pitcure which was demolished, was indeed a car dealership, Renault i think. The station building was in an average condition when I worked there. Back then, i never really looked around as much as I would do now, i was in my late teens/early 20s and so didnt really care. But i think it still had the hatch in what must have been the ticket office. Round the back was a storeroom, accessed down a ramp. It must have sat on the original line. Sadly now, it too has been demolished and the entire site is now a housing development!
